The other day I was browsing some of my favourite blogs – as bloggers do – and I came across a post on Dog Milk that really interested me. Capree posted about The 13 Project, an idea created by Serena Faber Nelson at Pretty Fluffy that is all about encouraging bloggers and non-bloggers to help animals in whatever way they can.
For many people, myself included, the sheer number of animals needing help can be overwhelming. And, I doubt I’m alone in saying it can be overwhelming to the point of wanting to cry in a corner. However, tears must be wiped away, and compassion must be turned into action (you can quote me on that).
I think what I like most about The 13 Project is that it confronts, head-on, the misconception that you need to have boatloads of time or money to make a difference. You don’t! Any little bit helps.
Terrifyingly, there are only
13 weeks 12.5 weeks left in 2012! With that in mind, The 13 Project wants to inspire us all to perform 13 acts of kindness towards our fellow animals. That could be volunteering your time, your talents, or even something as simple as sharing adoptable animals on Facebook or Twitter or Pinterest.
To join, all you have to do is come up with a list of up to 13 ways you can help animals before the end of 2013. You don’t need to be a millionaire, you don’t need to have a website, or be a member of a rescue organization… all you need is the desire to make a difference. If you’re time poor, make your list just one goal – or 3 or 5 things.
So, here are my list of goals…
Do a second round-up of old towels, blankets and dog items to donate.Done!
Knit bow ties and scarves with 100% of proceeds going to the BTRC.Done!
Share more local adoptable pets on Twitter, Facebook and this blog.Done!
6. Visit Farm Sanctuary while in California next month and blog about it.
8. Buy holiday gifts at places like The Animal Rescue Site.
9. Get my chocolate fix from Rescue Chocolate – it’s vegan!
10. Write about and share the WSPA Collars Not Cruelty campaign.
11. Sign the petition and raise awareness about Hershey’s Bill to end BSL in Ontario.
Of course, share and promote The 13 Project with the hope to inspire others!Done!
